How to Be a Great Friend: Building an SEL Classroom Through Kindnes

Creating a strong social-emotional learning environment begins with helping every child feel seen, valued and included.
In Episode 5 of The Kindness Effect: Kindness for Kids, “How to Be a Great Friend,” children discover how everyday choices can build healthy friendships and stronger classroom communities.
The episode reminds students that being a great friend is not about being the funniest, fastest or most popular person. Friendship grows through simple actions such as listening with care, including others, keeping promises, celebrating another person’s success and offering forgiveness when mistakes happen.
One of the episode’s most important lessons is that children sometimes spend so much time looking for good friends that they forget to focus on becoming one.
After watching the episode, teachers and parents can continue the conversation by asking:
What qualities make someone a great friend?
What does listening with care look like?
How can we notice when someone feels left out?
How can we repair a friendship after a mistake?
Are we being the kind of friend we would like to have?
Encourage each child to choose one friendship skill to practice during the week. A student might invite someone to join a game, sit beside a classmate who is alone, listen without interrupting or encourage a friend who is having a difficult day.
These small actions help create classrooms where children feel safe, connected and ready to learn. When friendship skills are discussed, modeled and practiced consistently, social-emotional learning becomes part of the classroom culture.
Teachers can extend the episode with the How to Be a Great Friend companion resource. The packet includes discussion prompts, student worksheets, a friendship skill check-in, a weekly kindness challenge, bulletin board materials and differentiated coloring pages.
